The potatoes become soft and comforting, the eggplant turns silky and absorbs the sauce, and the green beans bring a satisfying texture. As they cook together, their flavors combine into a rich and warming dish without meat.

    Northeastern Chinese Harvest Vegetable Stew

A Hearty Homestyle Stew with Corn, Pumpkin, Potatoes, and Green Beans

Northeastern Chinese Harvest Vegetable Stew, known as Dongbei Da Feng Shou (东北大丰收), brings a generous mix of vegetables together in one comforting pot.

This meat-free version combines sweet corn, pumpkin, potatoes, and green beans in a savory broth. As the vegetables gently simmer, their flavors come together, creating a dish that is hearty and satisfying without meat.

Inspired by the abundant harvests of northeastern China, this rustic dish is made for sharing around the dinner table.

    Ingredients

    • Corn on the Cob, cut into sections
    • Pumpkin
    • Potatoes
    • Green Beans
    • Fresh Garlic
    • Ginger
    • Green Onion
    • Light Soy Sauce
    • Cooking Oil
    • Water or Vegetable Broth
    • Salt, as needed

    What Makes This Dish Special

    A Celebration of Harvest Vegetables

Corn, pumpkin, potatoes, and green beans bring a colorful mix of textures and flavors. Each ingredient contributes something different, from sweet corn to soft, comforting potatoes.

    Naturally Sweet and Savory

Pumpkin and corn add natural sweetness that balances the savory broth. Slow simmering lets the vegetables absorb the seasoning while retaining their individual flavors.

    Hearty Without Meat

Potatoes and pumpkin give the stew substance, while corn and green beans add texture. The result is a satisfying vegetable dish that feels generous and comforting.

    Northeastern Chinese Homestyle Cooking

Da Feng Shou reflects the warm, rustic character of northeastern Chinese cooking: familiar ingredients, generous portions, and a shared pot that brings people together.

    Cooking Notes

The corn is cut into manageable sections, and the potatoes and pumpkin are cut into large chunks so they hold their shape during simmering. The green beans are trimmed and left long or cut in half.

Garlic, ginger, and green onion are gently cooked in oil until fragrant. The vegetables are then combined with light soy sauce and enough water or vegetable broth to simmer without becoming a soup.

The vegetables are added in stages as needed, giving the potatoes, corn, and green beans enough time to cook through. Pumpkin that softens quickly can be added later to keep it from breaking apart.

Toward the end, the broth is allowed to reduce slightly, leaving a flavorful sauce around the tender vegetables.

    Serving Suggestions

Northeastern Chinese Harvest Vegetable Stew pairs especially well with:

    • Steamed Rice
    • Steamed Buns
    • Vegetable Dumplings
    • Tofu with Black Bean Sauce
    • Cucumber Salad
    • Stir-Fried Asparagus with Button Mushrooms

It can be served as the centerpiece of a meat-free meal or as a hearty vegetable dish in a larger family-style menu.

    Amy’s Kitchen Tip

Cut the pumpkin into larger pieces than the potatoes if it softens quickly. This helps both vegetables become tender without the pumpkin disappearing into the sauce.

  • Stir-Fried Asparagus with Button Mushrooms

    Stir-Fried Asparagus with Button Mushrooms

Tender-Crisp Asparagus with Juicy Mushrooms and Fresh Garlic

Stir-Fried Asparagus with Button Mushrooms is a light and flavorful vegetable dish made with fresh asparagus, white button mushrooms, and garlic.

The asparagus brings a fresh, delicate flavor and a pleasant bite, while the mushrooms add juicy texture and savory depth. Simple seasoning allows the natural flavors of both vegetables to shine.

Fresh and easy to pair with other dishes, it makes a lovely addition to a family-style dinner.

    Ingredients

    • Fresh Asparagus
    • White Button Mushrooms
    • Fresh Garlic
    • Cooking Oil
    • Salt
    • White Pepper, optional

    What Makes This Dish Special

    Fresh, Tender-Crisp Asparagus

Asparagus adds vibrant green color and a gently sweet flavor. Quick cooking keeps it tender while preserving a pleasant bite.

    Juicy, Savory Mushrooms

White button mushrooms bring natural savory flavor and a satisfying texture that complements the asparagus.

    Light Garlic Seasoning

Fresh garlic adds fragrance without overpowering the vegetables. The seasoning stays simple, keeping the dish balanced and fresh-tasting.

    A Versatile Vegetable Side

This dish pairs beautifully with richer meat dishes, delicate seafood, and tofu, adding variety to a shared meal.

    Cooking Notes

The tough ends of the asparagus are trimmed, and the stalks are cut into manageable pieces. The mushrooms are sliced evenly so they cook at a similar rate.

The mushrooms are cooked in a hot pan with a little oil, giving their moisture time to evaporate and their edges a chance to lightly brown. Garlic and asparagus are then added and quickly stir-fried until fragrant and tender.

Thicker asparagus may need a small splash of water and a little extra cooking time. The goal is juicy mushrooms and bright, tender-crisp asparagus without excess liquid in the pan.

    Serving Suggestions

Stir-Fried Asparagus with Button Mushrooms pairs especially well with:

    • Steamed Rice
    • Garlic Fish Fillets
    • Moo Shu Chicken
    • Tofu with Black Bean Sauce
    • Coconut Vegetable Curry
    • Shrimp Fried Rice

Its lighter flavor makes it a refreshing balance to richer dishes in a family-style menu.

    Amy’s Kitchen Tip

Give the mushrooms enough space in the pan. An overcrowded pan traps moisture, making it harder for the mushrooms to develop lightly browned edges and deeper flavor.

Watch the asparagus closely toward the end of cooking. Thin stalks cook quickly, so add them later than thicker pieces to help preserve their texture.

At Amy’s Private Kitchen, Stir-Fried Asparagus with Button Mushrooms can be served as part of a customized family-style dinner, private dining menu, or special event menu in Los Angeles.

With its tender-crisp texture and fragrant seasoning, this dish makes a satisfying addition to a family-style meal.

    Ingredients

    • Cauliflower
    • Fermented Black Beans (Dou Chi)
    • Fresh Garlic
    • Light Soy Sauce
    • Cooking Oil
    • Water, as needed
    • Chili Peppers, optional

    What Makes This Dish Special

    Rich Fermented Black Bean Flavor

Fermented black beans bring a distinctive savory depth. Their bold flavor turns a simple vegetable dish into a memorable part of the meal.

    Tender-Crisp Cauliflower

The cauliflower is cooked until tender while keeping a pleasant bite. Its florets hold the garlic and black bean seasoning beautifully.

    Simple Ingredients, Full Flavor

Fresh garlic and fermented black beans create a fragrant base, with light seasoning to let the cauliflower’s natural sweetness come through.

    A Versatile Family-Style Dish

This dish pairs easily with rice, tofu, meat, and seafood, making it a flexible vegetable option for shared dinners and gatherings.

    Cooking Notes

The cauliflower is cut into evenly sized florets to help it cook consistently. Fermented black beans are roughly chopped to release their flavor.

Garlic and fermented black beans are briefly cooked in oil until fragrant, then the cauliflower is added and tossed with the seasoning.

A small splash of water and a brief covered cooking period can help soften the thicker stems. The lid is then removed so excess moisture can cook off, leaving the cauliflower lightly coated in the savory seasoning.

    Serving Suggestions

Cauliflower with Black Bean Sauce pairs especially well with:

    • Steamed Rice
    • Egg Fried Rice
    • Garlic Fish Fillets
    • Moo Shu Chicken
    • Stir-Fried Zucchini with Egg
    • Cucumber Salad

Its bold, savory flavor complements milder dishes and adds variety to a family-style menu.

    Amy’s Kitchen Tip

Keep the cauliflower slightly crisp and avoid adding too much water. The goal is flavorful florets with a pleasant bite, rather than soft cauliflower sitting in excess sauce.

Fermented black beans are already salty, so taste before adding more soy sauce. For guests who enjoy a little heat, fresh chili peppers make a fragrant addition.

    A Comforting Rice Companion

The savory sauce makes this dish especially enjoyable with steamed rice. It can be served as a meatless main course or shared alongside vegetables, meat, and seafood.

    Cooking Notes

The tofu is cut into evenly sized pieces and handled gently to keep it from breaking apart.

Fermented black beans are roughly chopped to help release their flavor, then briefly cooked with garlic and ginger until fragrant. Water or vegetable broth is added to create the sauce before the tofu is gently simmered.

If a thicker sauce is desired, a small amount of cornstarch mixed with cold water can be added toward the end. Green onion provides a fresh finishing touch.

  • A Chinese Family-Style Dinner for a 95th Birthday Celebration in Los Angeles

A Chinese Family-Style Dinner for a 95th Birthday Celebration in Los Angeles

Some celebrations are especially meaningful because they bring several generations of a family together around one table.

For a recent 95th birthday celebration in Los Angeles, I prepared a nine-dish Chinese family-style dinner for approximately 25 family members. The gathering included an eight-year-old boy, younger guests, adults, older family members, and the 95-year-old guest of honor.

With such a wide range of ages and preferences at the same table, the menu needed to feel festive and generous while still being comfortable for everyone to enjoy. I kept the overall seasoning mild and built the dinner around familiar flavors, balanced ingredients, and a variety of dishes that could be shared easily across generations.

    The 9-Dish Birthday Dinner Menu

For this dinner, I did not wait until all nine dishes were finished before serving. Instead, I started the meal with four dishes already on the table, then served the remaining five hot dishes gradually over the next 45 minutes.

    First Four Dishes

    1. Northeastern Chinese Pork Rib Stew
    2. Celery & Peanut Salad
    3. Moo Shu Chicken
    4. Broccoli, Wood Ear Mushrooms & Carrots

Served Over the Next 45 Minutes

    1. Curry Chicken
    2. Shrimp Fried Rice
    3. Garlic Green Beans
    4. Beef Chow Mein
    5. Garlic Fish Fillets

Designing a Menu for Several Generations

One of the most important considerations for this birthday dinner was the age range of the guests. An eight-year-old child, younger family members, parents, grandparents, and a 95-year-old guest of honor were all sharing the same meal.

Because of that, I kept the overall seasoning mild rather than building the menu around strong heat or very intense flavors. I wanted the food to be flavorful and satisfying, but still approachable for children and older guests.

The menu also needed enough variety to suit different eating preferences. Some guests preferred lighter vegetable dishes, while others were looking for meat, seafood, rice, or chow mein. I also wanted vegetarian guests to have real options on the table rather than simply eating around the meat dishes.

How I Build a Family-Style Menu for a Larger Party

For a larger Chinese family-style gathering, I prefer to give the menu a clear structure rather than simply adding more dishes.

I usually include one hearty stew and one cold dish. The stew gives the table something warm, comforting, and substantial, while the cold dish adds freshness and contrast.

For a group of around 20 to 35 guests, I also like to include both fried rice and chow mein. They are familiar, easy to share, and help anchor the meal without making the menu depend too heavily on meat dishes.

I also make sure there are at least two vegetable-focused dishes. This keeps the menu balanced and gives vegetarian guests satisfying choices of their own.

The remaining dishes are usually built around proteins paired with vegetables rather than serving meat alone. I also try not to repeat the same vegetables across the menu. Using different vegetables in different dishes gives the table more color, texture, and variety, and helps each dish feel distinct.

For this birthday dinner, that meant combining a pork rib stew, a cold celery and peanut salad, shrimp fried rice, chow mein, vegetable dishes, chicken, fish, and other protein-and-vegetable combinations into one balanced spread.

Balancing Meat, Vegetables, and Vegetarian Options

When planning a larger menu, balance matters just as much as quantity.

Rather than filling the table with several heavy meat dishes, I prefer to mix proteins with vegetables whenever possible. This keeps the meal lighter, gives guests more variety, and allows each dish to contribute something different to the overall spread.

For vegetarian guests, having at least two dedicated vegetable dishes is especially important. Dishes such as garlic green beans or broccoli with wood ear mushrooms and carrots can stand on their own rather than feeling like side dishes added as an afterthought.

Using different vegetables across the menu also helps create a more thoughtful dining experience. Instead of seeing the same broccoli, carrots, or onions repeated from plate to plate, guests experience different textures, colors, and flavors throughout the meal.

    Serving the Dinner in Stages

For a larger Chinese family-style dinner, I like to make sure guests have a complete selection on the table from the beginning while still keeping the later dishes hot and freshly cooked.

At the start of this dinner, I served four dishes together: Northeastern Chinese Pork Rib Stew, Celery & Peanut Salad, Moo Shu Chicken, and Broccoli with Wood Ear Mushrooms & Carrots.

This gave the table a good balance right away: a warm and substantial stew, a cold dish, a protein dish, and a vegetable-focused option. Guests could begin eating comfortably without waiting for the entire menu to be finished.

The remaining five dishes were then served gradually over the next 45 minutes: Curry Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Garlic Green Beans, Beef Chow Mein, and Garlic Fish Fillets.

This approach works especially well for larger gatherings because it keeps the table generous from the beginning while allowing the later dishes to arrive hot and fresh. Instead of holding every dish until all nine are ready, the meal continues to build naturally as guests eat, talk, and spend time together.

I finished with the garlic fish fillets so the fish could be served as fresh and hot as possible.

Why Family-Style Dining Works So Well for a Celebration

Chinese family-style dining is especially well suited to a multigenerational celebration because guests are not limited to one individual entrée. Everyone can take a little of several dishes, return to their favorites, and eat at their own pace.

For a group of 25, that flexibility matters. A child may prefer fried rice, chow mein, or mild chicken, while older guests may enjoy the stew, fish, or vegetables. Younger adults can try a little of everything, and vegetarian guests still have dishes designed specifically for them.

The goal is not simply to serve a large amount of food. It is to create a table where different generations and different preferences can all fit naturally into the same meal.

Cooking Fresh in the Client’s Home

For private events, the cooking process begins well before the first dish reaches the table. I organize the ingredients, preparation, cooking order, and serving sequence in advance, then adjust the final plan around the client’s kitchen setup and the flow of the event.

Cooking on-site allows many dishes to be served hot and fresh, but it also requires careful planning, especially when preparing a multi-dish menu for a larger group. The order of cooking matters just as much as the dishes themselves.

For this 95th birthday celebration, the goal was simple: create a warm, generous Chinese dinner that felt special enough for the occasion while still being comfortable and enjoyable for everyone, from the eight-year-old guest to the 95-year-old guest of honor.

  • Why Chinese Family-Style Dining Is Perfect for Birthday Parties and Family Gatherings in Los Angeles

Why Chinese Family-Style Dining Is Perfect for Birthday Parties and Family Gatherings in Los Angeles

When people search for a private chef in Los Angeles, they are often looking for more than just food.

They may be planning a birthday party, a family gathering, a holiday dinner, or a special celebration at home. They want something that feels personal, generous, and easy to share — without spending the entire event cooking in the kitchen.

That is exactly why Chinese family-style dining works so well for private events.

At Amy’s Private Kitchen, I create customized Chinese menus for private dinners, birthday parties, family gatherings, and special events throughout Los Angeles.

Why Chinese Food Works So Well for Parties

Chinese food is naturally designed for sharing.

Instead of serving one individual entrée per guest, several dishes are placed in the center of the table so everyone can try a little of everything.

For a family-style party, this creates a more relaxed and social atmosphere.

    A typical menu may include:

    • A cold dish or salad
    • A braised or stewed dish
    • Several meat or seafood dishes
    • One or two vegetables
    • Fried rice
    • Noodles
    • Optional dumplings or handmade dishes

This style works especially well for birthdays, family celebrations, and larger home gatherings.

Chinese Private Chef vs. Standard Catering

When people search for Chinese catering in Los Angeles, they often find restaurant trays, delivery packages, or buffet-style catering.

Those options can be convenient, but a Chinese private chef offers a more customized experience.

A private chef can design the menu around:

    • Guest count
    • Favorite dishes
    • Spice preferences
    • Dietary needs
    • Kitchen setup
    • Event style
    • Serving flow

The food can also be cooked or finished on-site, which is especially helpful for stir-fries, vegetables, seafood, noodles, and other dishes that taste best fresh.

Private Chef for a Birthday Party

Hiring a private chef for a birthday party can make the event feel more personal without making the host responsible for all the food preparation.

For a Chinese birthday party, the menu can be designed to include a mix of comforting dishes, colorful vegetables, rice, noodles, and several different proteins.

For parties of approximately 15–35 guests, I usually recommend around 8–10 dishes.

This keeps the table generous without making the kitchen overly complicated.

A Sample Chinese Birthday Party Menu

For a birthday gathering of around 20–30 guests, a family-style menu might include:

    Cold Dish
    Apple & Purple Cabbage Salad

    Braised Dish
    Northeastern Chinese Pork Rib Stew

    Main Dishes
    Moo Shu Chicken
    Hunan-Style Stir-Fried Beef
Stir-Fried Shrimp with Bell Peppers & Onion

    Vegetable
Stir-Fried Broccoli with Wood Ear Mushrooms & Carrots

    Rice
Green Bean & Beef Fried Rice

    Noodles
    Beef Chow Mein

    Additional Dish
Garlic Green Beans, Curry Chicken, Garlic Fish Fillets, or another seasonal dish

This kind of menu gives guests a balance of mild and bold flavors, meat and seafood, vegetables, rice, and noodles.

    Private Chef for Family Gatherings

A private chef for a family gathering can be especially helpful when the guest list includes different ages and food preferences.

    Children may prefer mild dishes.

Older guests may enjoy softer braised dishes or lighter vegetables.

Other guests may want something spicy or more strongly seasoned.

A customized Chinese family-style menu makes it easier to balance all of these preferences.

    Family-Style Catering in Los Angeles

Some people search for family-style catering in Los Angeles without necessarily knowing whether they want restaurant catering or a private chef.

Family-style service is different from standard buffet catering because the meal is designed around sharing dishes together.

It can feel warmer and more personal, especially for:

    • Birthday parties
    • Family reunions
    • Holiday dinners
    • Graduation celebrations
    • Anniversaries
    • Small private events

For Chinese food, family-style service feels especially natural because sharing is an important part of the dining experience.

What Makes Authentic Chinese Family-Style Dining Different?

Authentic Chinese family-style dining is not defined by one specific dish.

It is about balance and variety.

    A good table may include:

    • Something refreshing
    • Something braised and comforting
    • Several proteins
    • Fresh vegetables
    • Rice or noodles
    • Different textures and flavors

For example, a menu might combine a mild curry chicken, a bold Hunan-style beef dish, a fresh shrimp stir-fry, a vegetable dish, fried rice, and noodles.

The goal is for the whole table to work together.

    Chinese Catering for 20–35 Guests

When planning Chinese catering for 20–35 guests, menu design becomes especially important.

Some dishes are excellent for smaller dinners but too time-consuming to prepare in large quantities.

For larger parties, I usually recommend dishes that:

    • Hold heat well
    • Can be cooked efficiently in batches
    • Taste good in larger quantities
    • Are easy to share
    • Balance richer and lighter flavors

Braised dishes, fried rice, noodles, cold dishes, and simple stir-fries are especially useful for larger groups.

    Private Chef for 20 People

If you are searching for a private chef for 20 people, the menu should be designed differently from a small dinner for six guests.

For a larger group, I focus on:

    • Generous portions
    • Reliable flavor
    • Efficient cooking
    • Smooth serving flow
    • A balanced 8–10 dish menu

Rather than adding more and more dishes, it is usually better to increase the quantity of each dish.

Chinese Private Dining in Los Angeles

For smaller groups, Chinese private dining in Los Angeles can be more detailed and personalized.

Private dining for approximately 4–10 guests allows more time for:

    • Handmade dumplings
    • Delicate seafood dishes
    • More complicated preparation
    • Smaller-batch cooking
    • More careful finishing

This is different from a larger party menu, where volume and timing become more important.

West Los Angeles Private Chef Service

West Los Angeles has many restaurants and catering options, but some hosts are looking for something more personal than restaurant delivery.

A West Los Angeles private chef can bring customized food directly into the home while also handling menu planning, shopping, preparation, and on-site cooking.

This can be especially useful for families hosting guests in:

    • West Los Angeles
    • Santa Monica
    • Brentwood
    • Culver City
    • Marina del Rey
    • Beverly Hills
    • Nearby Westside neighborhoods

When Should You Choose a Private Chef Instead of Restaurant Catering?

A private chef may be a better fit if you want:

    • A customized menu
    • Fresh cooking
    • Family-style service
    • Adjustable spice levels
    • Dietary flexibility
    • A more personal dining experience
    • Less work for the host

Restaurant catering may be the better option if your priority is simply lower-cost food delivery for a large group.

Both can work well. It depends on the kind of event you want to create.

Hunan-Style Stir-Fried Beef is a bold, aromatic dish made with thinly sliced beef, fresh chilies, garlic, and fragrant herbs.

The beef is quickly stir-fried over high heat so it stays tender and juicy, while fresh peppers, garlic, and cilantro create the signature spicy, savory flavor associated with Hunan-style cooking.

This dish is especially well suited for guests who enjoy stronger flavors and a little heat, making it a memorable addition to family-style dinners and party menus.

    Ingredients

    • Beef
    • Fresh Green Chilies
    • Fresh Red Chilies
    • Garlic
    • Ginger
    • Cilantro
    • Green Onion
    • Soy Sauce
    • Cooking Wine
    • White Pepper
    • Sugar
    • Cooking Oil
    • Hunan-Style Seasonings

    What Makes This Dish Special

    Bold Hunan-Style Flavor

This dish is known for its fresh chili aroma, savory seasoning, and high-heat stir-fried flavor.

Unlike dishes that rely mainly on heavy sauces, the flavor comes from fresh chilies, garlic, aromatics, and quickly cooked beef.

    Tender Stir-Fried Beef

The beef is thinly sliced and lightly marinated before cooking.

A quick stir-fry over high heat helps keep the beef tender while creating a savory, lightly seared flavor.

    Fresh Chilies & Aromatics

Fresh chilies are a defining part of this dish, adding both heat and fragrance.

Garlic, ginger, green onion, and cilantro give the finished dish layers of fresh aroma.

A Great Choice for Spicy-Food Lovers

Hunan-Style Stir-Fried Beef brings a stronger, more vibrant flavor to a family-style menu.

It works especially well alongside milder vegetable dishes, cold appetizers, rice, and noodles.

    Cooking Notes

The beef is sliced thinly and marinated briefly so it remains tender during high-heat cooking.

Fresh chilies, garlic, and ginger are stir-fried until fragrant before the beef is added.

The ingredients are cooked quickly so the beef stays juicy and the peppers retain some texture.

Fresh cilantro is added near the end to give the dish its characteristic fresh aroma.

    Spice Level

    Medium to Spicy

The spice level can be adjusted depending on guest preference, although some chili flavor is an important part of the character of the dish.

    如果你想给 Party 客户更多选择,可以写:

Spice level can be customized from mild to spicy.

    不过我会提醒一点:如果做到完全不辣,它就会失去一些“小炒黄牛肉”的特色。所以网站写 Mild / Medium / Spicy available 可以,但实际推荐至少保留一点鲜椒香。

    Amy’s Kitchen Tip

The key to Hunan-Style Stir-Fried Beef is cooking quickly over high heat.

Thinly sliced beef cooks in just a short time, so preparing all of the chilies, garlic, and aromatics before cooking helps prevent the beef from becoming overdone.

Fresh chilies and cilantro should remain noticeable in the finished dish, giving it a bright aroma and distinctive Hunan-style character.

At Amy’s Private Kitchen, Hunan-Style Stir-Fried Beef can be included as part of a customized private dining, family-style party, or special event menu in Los Angeles.
